Quartz, Concrete, Granite, Soapstone, Limestone, Marble, Laminate, Glass, Wood, Stainless Steel, and Tile, are the most popular forms of countertops for kitchens and bathrooms. The first focus before looking at any samples should be thinking about your lifestyle. If you still have small children, you know that counters take a beating from toys, people, and from early cooking experiences!
Do you mind having something that requires a little upkeep each month, or would you prefer something that you leave and forget about. Next, let’s look at budget, there are many ranges for all materials, but have a solid budget plan before moving forward. When designing our homes we try and choose a material that is easy to clean, maintain, and will look beautiful for many years to come. A classic color that isn’t too trendy, assures us that families will love this kitchen for many years to come.
Quartz is growing in popularity, and combines mineral, color, and resin. It needs very little maintenance, and can withstand oils, stains, and knife-work. Quartz can be found in a variety of colors to suit any taste.
Coming onto the scene more than a decade ago, Concrete is still trendy. Concrete is durable, but can crack, stain, and wear in high traffic areas. Also, if you decide that it isn’t for you after a few years, taking it out can be a big project to undertake.
Granite is gorgeous, it can easily elevate a simple kitchen. However, it can crack, and has been known to dull a few knife blades over the years. The biggest thing to note with granite is that it needs to be resealed, typically ever year.
Soapstone and Limestone aren’t as common, but are wonderful with hot pans directly on the surface. Small nicks or cuts could be sanded away, but many prefer a naturally worn look after a few years.
Marble is a personal favorite for aesthetic, but it does burn easily and requires maintenance to keep stains at bay. More commonly used in baths and bathroom countertops where excessive heat and staining is much less likely to occur.
